A little known tid-bit, cookies share a common fact with penicillin, they were both created by accident. In the case of penicillin, a culture was uncovered for days and grew some mold; in the case of cookies, cooks used to test cake batter by baking very small amounts to ensure tastiness. These little test cakes were called “koekje,” meaning “little cake” in Dutch.
Originally cookies were made with a sweetened dough or batter and baked in single-size servings and eaten out-of-hand. Today, Americans alone consume over 2 billion cookies a year! Wow, that’s a lot of cookies, and Girl Scout cookie season is upon us! Thank the Dutch, ladies & gentleman!
One of the best things about cookies is that they’re so versatile with so many ways to make them. You have your basic sugar cookie, chocolate chip cookie, peanut butter cookie, oatmeal cookie, mint cookies, white chocolate cookies, walnut cookies, mint white chocolate walnut cookies and the list goes on and on. It’s a diverse and wonderful world, the world of cookies.
And Valentine’s Day is always the perfect day to show the one you love the way to sweetness with a batch of homemade cookies.
Stay tuned for the Cookie Made In Heaven recipe.
